Social media is everywhere, and it’s undeniably a very important part of campaigns. It’s a growing means of communication today and an essential platform for generating awareness for a candidate or cause. Social media outlets are a great place to spread awareness about your campaign, provide an easy way for supporters to follow the campaign, interact with supporters and volunteers, coordinate events, and raise money.

With countless social media platforms and limited time and resources, it can be difficult to determine which sites are actually worth your time to pursue.

The social media scene can be overwhelming, but you can start building your online presence with these 4 main networks:

Facebook is far and away the largest of any social network, and choosing not to use it means missing out on a large audience of potential voters. Each Facebook user is connected to an average of 80 pages, groups, or events – all of which are the perfect opportunity to spread your campaign message and interact with your audience.
Once a page is created, it can them be promoted through various other marketing outlets to gain support for the campaign. These outlets might include a campaign website, Twitter account, YouTube video descriptions, and offline marketing pieces such as direct mail and campaign literature. You can also pay to promote your page and posts to potential supporters right on Facebook.

Twitter is another social network that can add value to your campaign. Because of the conversational feel and frequency of tweets, Twitter is a place where followers get a real sense of connection to you and your messages. Tweets can contain links to websites, press releases, event info or just a simple message. By replying, retweeting, and joining conversations on Twitter, you can effectively engage and connect with your audience. Twitter is also a great avenue to stay on top of breaking news and connect with reporters. Because Twitter is an ongoing conversation, be sure to stay on top of your account by checking it at least once per day.

LinkedIn boasts more than 270 million users. As a business-oriented social network, LinkedIn can be a perfect place to connect with professionals or area experts in certain fields. LinkedIn is a living resume, and a great platform to display your accomplishments and get professional support from your network. You can join (or start!) groups that would be of interest to you or help you professionally, connect with educational organizations and political leaders you’d like to be associated with, and more. The possibilities are endless! This is a great space to enhance your credibility, but be careful not to campaign too much. Rather, focus on harvesting your network and sharing helpful information.

Google+ rounds out the big four social networks that could add value to your social media presence. Google+ provides an easy and low-cost opportunity to show up in potential voter’s search results because of its integration with the world’s most dominant search engine. Building a robust Google+ page is a great way to gain support for your cause, issue, or platform.

Beyond these essential social networks, there are plenty of other sites that are worth exploring. YouTubeTumblrInstagram, or Pinterest could potentially further the goals of your campaign’s communication strategy. The important thing is to determine how each network will contribute toward your overall campaign goals. If the outlet would not provide a tremendous value for the amount of time required, don’t bother! It’s ok if you’re not on all of these as long as you are integrating some sort of digital program into your communication plan.

A solid digital program starts with a robust, up-to-date website that integrates field, communication, and fundraising aspects, as well as an email program. From there, start to build out your Facebook and Twitter. Then, evaluate your time and remaining social media outlets to see what fits.
